YouthBuild Providence
YouthBuild is an alternative education and workforce development program serving out-of-school youth, ages 16-24. Our mission is to unleash the intelligence and positive energy of low-income Providence youth to rebuild their communities and lives.
Since its founding in 1996, YouthBuild has succeeded in giving scores of Providence youth a chance to reshape their futures by demanding an intense level of commitment from those who come through our doors. The program’s 10-month intervention fuses academic instruction with workforce development and service learning. With courses in math, language arts, social studies, and science, YouthBuild's student-centered academic curriculum readies participants for the GED and higher education. Its job-training lessons fuse community development with employment preparation – students work alongside certified, on-staff tradesmen to build an affordable home for a low-income Providence family and master basic construction skills in the process.
Collectively, YouthBuild Providence graduates reflect the transformative power of alternative education programs. They demonstrate that with strong support mechanisms, all of Providence’s youth can become productive, engaged citizens.
