PROVIDENCE — New Roots Providence, a local program that supports faith-based and community organizations, announced it is providing $450,000 in grants to 38 organizations statewide.

Grantees include the Genesis Center, Groundwork Providence, the Riverzedge Arts Project, and Social Venture Partners RI, among others. Each organization is receiving an award between $2,000 and $15,000, with an average grant of approximately $12,000, according to New Roots Director Marti Rosenberg.

The grants will help with strategic planning, professional development, board development, and revenue development planning.

Since 2005, New Roots, an initiative of the local nonprofit organization the Providence Plan, has invested more than $5 million in local organizations, through grants and technical assistance and training, serving 87 faith and community groups, Rosenberg said.

The organization also has funding to award an additional 25 grants in 2011 totaling $300,000, according to Rosenberg. The organization will request proposals to award those grants in the coming months, she said.

“New Roots Providence’s funding of Rhode Island’s nonprofits is an investment in the long-term expertise and effectiveness of these organizations,” Rosenberg said.

The Genesis Center, an adult-education agency in Providence, will use the New Roots funding to support its Leadership Development Project, which provides strategic assistance to the center’s CEO and board.

Groundwork Providence, which started in 1983 as Keep Providence Beautiful and helps develop healthy, sustainable and green communities, will use the grant money to expand its services to the community, diversify its income streams, and increased its long-term fiscal stability.

The Riverzedge Arts Project, which gives teens work experience in the visual arts, will use its grant towards securing a new site and creating a business plan to support its planned expansion.
