Voter Turnout in Providence
As the 2006 election approaches, you will undoubtedly hear many news stories citing statistics about “voter turnout” and explaining what an important variable turnout is in deciding our elections. Common themes in these stories are often that the United States has low turnout when compared to other democracies or that
certain demographic groups turnout in higher numbers than others. All of this information, however, is usually at the national or state level and is thus difficult for people to relate to their own communities.
With this in mind, we decided to more thoroughly investigate voter turnout in Providence.Using data from the Rhode Island Board of Elections, we have prepared a map of voter turnout from the 2004 General Election.
The map shows the percentage of registered voters in each precinct that actually cast a ballot (click to enlarge). The citywide average in 2004 was 42.7%, significantly lower than the state (62.1%) and national averages (60.7%) For more information on this project, contact Michael Pickford. |
