In the fall of 2006, 60 Feinstein High School students took a closer look at Providence using GIS. They explored topics including immigration, which prompted the question, "How can we help Providence become more diverse and prevent different ethnicities from being segregated?"  To make their maps, students explored data from the US Census detailing race/ethnicity and place of birth, as well as an aggregated set of School Department data that added language spoken as a variable. The Feinstein students- Juniors and Seniors on the Red Team- were able to track different ethnic groups as they migrated to and within Providence over time. They also designed and conducted a survey to track the perceptions of where Providence residents think different ethnic groups are concentrated within their city, including Cape Verdean, Dominican, Italian, Portuguese, and Russian. With GIS at hand, they were able to visualize just where in the world their classmates were coming from, and where they settled when they came to Providence.
