Cost to Incarcerate 2006 Sentenced Population
This map of the month portrays the amount per neighborhood it costs to incarcerate the population sentenced to the Adult Correctional Institute in 2006, based on the address of residence in Providence. In 2006, 1,198 Providence residents were sentenced to the Adult Correctional Institute.
The cost to incarcerate these individuals for two-thirds of their sentence length totals over forty-seven million dollars (excluding administrative and capital costs). For most offense types, two-thirds of the length of a sentence is the guideline that determines when an inmate can be eligible for parole. While the share of individuals incarcerated for violent and sexual crimes in 2006 is 22%, the cost to incarcerate this population is almost one and a half times what it costs to incarcerate the remaining 88%: $27,892,189, compared to $19,670,251, with the difference due, in part, to the longer sentence lengths violent and sex offenses carry.
